Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the third youngest daughter of Lithuanian-Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. When her father passed away in the role of a carnival barker as an infant She was required to support the family working both as a maid and server. Ruth was raised in the tenement area of poverty of Boston, Massachusetts, where she was educated. But she quit school only after two years to explore a career in acting. Her journey was not without obstacles. her chosen career path. When she was in New York she was hired to take photos for a publication about crime, but no theatrical job opportunities came up. As a hat check girl in a nightclub, she quit and returned to Boston. It was the New England Repertory Company was her first gig as an actor who was steady. She earned money by performing during the daytime in the ushering department. Drama studies led her to earn her degree in the Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
